HELLO FLAWLESS: IT STARTS WITH SKIN

Always wonder why when you see cosmetics ads, the models have alabaster-smooth skin? Well that may be thanks to very expensive retouching to eliminate blemishes or flaws in the makeup.  Since you can't retouch real life, there are a few tricks that you can utilize to get your face as close to perfection as possible.

1. KNOW YOUR SKIN
Pick foundations that work with your skin type:  I avoid powder foundation like the plague, so for oily skin, try a cream foundation that dries to a powder finish for oil absorption.  For dry or normal skin, I always prefer liquid for even, translucent coverage.  It is very important to choose a color that fits your skin tone exactly...if you are having trouble, ask one of the artists at your favorite counter for help.  You are going to have to be able to let go of your favorite brand if the shade isn't right for you.  Talk to the sales staff about your concerns: anti-aging, sunscreen, shine control, etc!

MAYBELLINE Fit Me Collection
The drugstore answer to high-priced HD foundations, Maybelline has rebranded its line to include this chic collection of translucent foundations and concealer which work well with most skin types!  With 18 shades, you are sure to find one that matches you!

2. PRIME
Makeup artists and industry professionals have jumped on the silicone primer craze, which is great if you are preparing a model for a photo shoot, but for everyday use, it actually prevents the foundation from blending naturally with your skin, resulting in a look that can come off quite heavy.  Instead try a blended primer for a lighter, luminous look.  Apply all over face and neck and allow to soak into skin for a minute.

MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microperfecting Primer
Not only does this primer come in 7 shades to counteract impefections, but its blend of silicone and water-based ingredients allow for greater absorbtion into the skin for a truly flawless finish.

3. CONCEAL
Using a thick concealer will cover dark circles and blemishes before foundation application.  Dab concealer on with a brush and then blend with fingertip.  Set with a dusting of translucent powder.

4. BASE
Using a moistened cosmetic sponge, apply foundation onto the face, beginning in the center and blending out towards the edges.  Make sure to blend toward the ears and down the neck, including around the eyes.

DIOR Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup SPF 10
This a great foundation which will work for MOST skin types, and provides a great medium to lightweight coverage suitable for daily use.

5. SET
Now I know I mentioned that I avoid powder like the plague, and if you have used a powder foundation or a cream-to-powder formula, you can skip this step, but all liquid makeup needs to be set, or it can run right off your face.  Use a high quality, talc-free translucent powder (The ONLY one I will use is MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Powder) with a GOOD QUALITY powder brush in circular motions, making sure to tap off excess powder from the brush before applying to your face.  The key here is to use as little powder as possible.  The key to getting that dewy finish that is preferable to pure matte these days is to use a liquid spritz to fix your makeup.  This could be as simple as a spray of water, but the professionals can agree on one product:
