I get asked all of the time how you can freshen up your skin and get a radiant glow. Not by using makeup, but by actually having radiant skin. I'll never forget that on my first ever beauty blogger excursion, two of the biggest beauty bloggers in the beauty blogging world were talking about makeup and skincare. More importantly, they were talking about how they had become more focused on having the best skin possible so they don't have to wear a ton of makeup.
There are always lots of new products and ingredients coming down the beauty street, but some have survived the test of time, are not expensive and honestly just work. Glycolic acid, one of the types of alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs, is one of those ingredients. At concentrations over 4%, glycolic acid has been shown to help photodamaged skin as well as help improve the overall texture of skin. This isn't me saying this, it's one of the things with which cosmetic scientists all agree. Glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliant. It is similar to a manual scrub, but can penetrate more deeply with less scrubbing.
The best way to start using a glycolic acid is to start small and work your way up. It's an acid after all! Start with a clean face and apply a 5% glycolic acid to clean skin before going to bed. Of course, you should do a skin patch test first to make sure it's not too strong for you. You may get a slight tingling or itching effect but honestly, that means it's working. That feeling will subside. Obviously, if serious redness persists, then your skin may just be too sensitive for this ingredient. But for now, let's assume you're A-OK to move forward.
Start by using a 5% glycolic acid a few times per week for several weeks. The good news is that you will start to see your skin texture smoothing about and becoming more radiant. The bad news is that after a few weeks, you will start to build up a tolerance. Have no fear! After your skin has become tolerant to the 5%, you can bump yourself up to 10% for even more dramatic results.
Please don't skip the 5%, especially if you are not accustomed to using an acid. It will be seriously uncomfortable and you'll be mad at me. I don't want that to happen.
Continue to use the 10% a few times per week and you will see amazing results. Your skin will become smoother, more radiant and you may start to see a slight reduction in sun damage.
I've been really pleased with the results I've gotten from Reviva Labs 5% and 10% Glycolic acid treatments. I do not have sensitive skin and do have a high acid tolerance. However, even on me, the 10% has a lot of kick to it. While nothing will make you perfect overnight, a good glycolic acid is one of the closest things to delivering those kind of real results.
Check out Reviva Labs. Their products are stable, work well and don't cost an arm and a leg. Pick up either the 5% or 10% for between $25.00 and $29.00.
